The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

My cousin told me I should watch this movie. She thought I’d really like it. I looked it up. First thing I realised was that it’s about a group of seniors. I thought, “Nyeh… Sounds like a drag.” And obviously, I was wrong. It’s an AMAZING movie. I laughed and I cried and I thought at the end, “I’d definitely want to watch this again.”

I’m sharing some quotes/favourite bits.

Evelyn: Nothing here has worked out quite as I expected.
Muriel: Most things don’t. But sometimes what happens instead is the good stuff.

***

Evelyn: [about their new environment] Initially you’re overwhelmed. But gradually you realize it’s like a wave. Resist, and you’ll be knocked over. Dive into it, and you’ll swim out the other side.

***

Evelyn: There is no past that we can bring back by longing for it. Only a present that builds and creates itself as the past withdraws.

***

Jean: The whole thing is actually tremendously exciting. Not just getting on the plane, but getting on the plane and turning left.
Norman Cousins: Turning left?
Jean: First class. And home in time for our fortieth wedding anniversary. We haven’t quite decided how to mark the occasion.
Madge Hardcastle: Perhaps a minute’s silence.

***

Evelyn: We get up in the morning.  We do our best.  Nothing else matters.

 ***

Evelyn: The only real failure is the failure to try. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing.

I love it too! I just find it quite sad that Jean left the hotel and went back, failing to see the beauty of the place.

Ah yes…but she knew where she belonged. And she was “turning left.” It would not be our way, but everyone makes a decision. It was a beautiful film that reminded me that there are so many opportunities and adventures waiting for us….

I had exactly the same thoughts about this movie, but it was actually incredibly moving! My favourite quote is this one by Sonny Kapoor: “In India, we have a saying; everything will be all right in the end. So if it is not all right, it is not yet the end.”

I like that quote too. I’m glad I gave this movie a chance. I wouldn’t have known what I was missing out on otherwise. :)
